Trans Fat’s Evil Twin

Just when you thought processed foods had become healthier, Brandeis University researchers report that an ingredient often used to replace trans fats may be just as bad for you.  Scientists discovered that people who ate foods made with “interesterified” fats experienced a significant decrease in HDL (good) cholesterol and a 20 percent increases in blood-sugar levels—both of which boost risk of heart disease.  “Replacing trans fats was meant to help people, but high amounts of the alternative can cause just as much damage,” says study author K.C Hayes, Ph.D.  To identify products that contain interesterified fats, check ingredients lists for “interesterifies soybean oil” or the term “stearate-rich.”

Think Young

No time for crossword puzzles?  A supplement could help keep you sharp.  Dutch scientists found that folic acid may improve your memory.  The researchers say that people who took 800 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day for 3 years exhibited memories that were 5 to 7 years younger than those who didn’t take the supplement.  A lack of folic acid may contribute to atrophy of the hippocampus, a part of the brain that plays a major role in memory, says study author Jane Durga, Ph.D.  You can add 800 mcg folic acid to your daily diet by eating a serving of Whole Grain Total cereal for breakfast (it’s fortified with this B vitamin) or by consuming a supplement, such as Nature’s Way Folic Acid (available at iherb.com).

Selenium Saves

A common nutrient may hold the secret to combating HIV.  University of Miami researchers found that patients who consumed a 200 microgram selenium supplement daily experienced a slower progression of the virus and improved immune function.  It’s a simple and inexpensive adjunct treatment, says study author Barry Hurwitz, Ph.D.  For reference, you can consume the same amount of selenium by downing just three Brazil nuts a day.
